New article!!!

This week we are continuing our focus on the media. We have one new article and the half hour long video from last week which Katie linked below. The article talks about the current female body archetype and the industries that push that archetype. I love the quote at the beginning so I thought I'd transcribe it for everyone:

"To men a man is but a mind. Who cares what face he carries or what he wears? But woman's body is the woman."

- Ambrose Bierce

A link!

I found this site about singles rights while reading Bust magazine and I thought it was pretty interesting. I never knew there was a line of activism that was pro-singles. That's pretty neat.

Killing Us Sofly 3

Because there were only three of us at the meeting today, and it is a pretty important and eye-opening topic, I thought I would post the link to the video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1993368502337678412&q=killing+us+softly+3&ei=7zY6SMX4H6Gm4QKU_cjoAw
I'm sure we'll refer to this video next time, so you should watch it. And if you are so inspired, you can bring an ad as well.

Guess what?! You don't have to read this Sunday.

We're going to mix it up a little bit this week. Instead of reading and then discussing the articles in our meeting tomorrow, we're going to bring in advertisements and watch a movie in our meeting tomorrow.

The movie is "Killing Us Softly 3" and it was created by Jean Kilborne. Some of you may have heard about it before. It deals with the portrayal of women in the media, but specifically within advertisements and what they mean for our society. So thinking on that same page, it would be great if you guys could bring in a few advertisements yourselves and we could discuss them after the movie. I've found that designer clothing advertisements are the most offensive...just to start you off. And household cleaning supplies...You get the point. So anyway, see you tomorrow!!!

Oh, and Derek won't be there...he's off scampering in the woods somewhere...so you'll have to deal with just me. Hopefully that won't be too horrible for you guys.
So it just occurred to me that I can't actually go see the play this Sunday because of silly wedding in North Dakota ridiculousness. Could we maybe go on the 29th? Unless no one else can go that day, then I'd just be, you know, out, as it were.

Cool website

Hi folks!

Since I almost never get a chance to participate in Sunday discussions due to work, I thought I'd share a link to a website I had forgotten about until today.
The organization and design leaves much to be desired, but there's a ton of information there from a feminist perspective on a topic I'm not sure we've devoted much time to (although, perhaps you have discussed and I just missed it. Either way.). One of the fascinating aspects of this site is how much of the info and research is enhanced with commentary by actual women. Good site. Much fun.

Take care,
Kris

Hi All,

Above are the remaining show times and info for the show which is being put on by Teatro del Pueblo. Mandi says they do pretty good work and it seems like although there is a cultural lens through which it's presented, there is probably some pertinent commentary involved. I know that many of you are theater fans just like I am, so it might be a fun "field trip" for us all. Katie and Derek had mentioned perhaps going to a performance in lieu of a regular meeting... I will talk to them on this, but I was thinking that perhaps next Sunday, the 25th might be a good day. I could get the tix - they are $16 or $14 for students/Fringe folks - if people are interested. I will run it by everyone again @ tonight's meeting to see about who is interested or if we want to use the meeting time next week, etc.

Besos,
Anita

New articles!

Hello friends!

This week we will be reading about and discussing what has come to be called America's "rape culture". The readings are not very long this time around but I think they should make for good conversation. The first article is a small sampling of crime statistics which lays the groundwork for the argument that we are in fact living within a culture of sexual violence and the second piece by Michael S. Kimmel discusses male sexuality and the rape culture with many interesting examples.

Much love everyone, Derek Z

if any of you care to keep up on my feminist-ey ways, or if you're interested in yet another feminist blog or (monthly book) reading group, check out the blog i co-run over at http://buckingthewave.wordpress.com. keep fighting the good fight!

Hello all. I have yet to make to one of the FDG meetings, post to the blog, or even comment on any postings. However, I've still been avidly following the happenings of this fine establishment and thought I'd pass along a link to an article found on BoingBoing.net.
The article displays a marital rating scale for wives created in 1939. Enjoy the read, it's quite appalling.

But for realz, I'm pretty sure I can come this week. I don't have a play OR a dinner party. This should be good.

Oh my gosh I hope we like reading at the last possible second

Yay we got the articles up!... getting later every week we'll have to stop this trend.  This week is a focus on reproductive rights courtesy of Katie Chen.

The meeting is being held at the new Derek and Katie residence located at 4229 Chicago ave S. Minneapolis.  I will try my best to make the living room remotely presentable by 7pm but you will probably have to forgive our filth as we slowly move in.

Much love friends!  If you feel like making treats I would be much obliged as we have no kitchen at the moment.
